Subject: woodstove-heated sauna

Dear M. Yli-Kovero,
Many thanks for your incredibly helpful site on sauna.
I would like to build a woodstove-heated sauna. I would most appreciate
any information you can offer about the type of woodstove that you deem
most appropriate for sauna. I am assuming, perhaps incorrectly, that any
small-medium sized woodstove might be capable of being a sauna heater.
Then, how does one place the stones (what sort of receptacle, where to
place the receptacle) on or around the woodstove?
Additionally, I will be building the sauna outside of our cabin, not inside
of it. Does this change at all your recommendations for insulating the
walls of the unit? Do you still recommend insulation in the walls of a
free-standing, outdoor sauna? I have heard so many conflicting reports
regarding wall insulation. Everyone seem to agree about ceiling insulation
... but not with regard to walls.

Finally, I am considering using rough-cut pine for the exterior of the
sauna (as this is also the material used on the outside of our cabin) and
redwood or cypress for the interior walls and benches. Do you have any
thoughts on this combination? Is there any reason NOT to use rough-cut
pine for the exterior walls of the sauna? Have you any experience with
using cypress for the interior walls?

I appreciate any suggestions you might have on the above inquiries.
Best regards and good sauna to you!

How do I find a reliable contractor in my area to build a quality sauna?
I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and am looking to build a sauna on my
property about 120 km South West of Edmonton.

I have been taking saunas since about 2 weeks old.

Smoke Sauna is best. Have built about 10.

For LP or Natural Gas or wood fired stoves.

Contact Gils Auto in Bruces Crossing, Michigan USA on Route 45 or Ripley Manufacturing in Ripley Michigan.

Red Cedar fails in about 15 years. The wood begins to cup from humidty changes. Better to use white cedar and stainless steel nails.

If building of cedar, fire up the sauna and let it cook for a day or so, this will drive out resins in the wood that can irritate the eye.

Make your changing room big enough for all in the suana.

Make sure your rocks are not sedimentary or sandstone. Granite ones, small ones and large ones, round from lake shores beds are best. Make sure you fill up all the space with rocks, otherwise the steam is poor.

Make sure you have ventilation. Otherwise it smells, you can't breathe and the women will not go in.

Don't forget you need a supply or access to water.

Don't forget you need to place to store the wood and keep it dry.

Make sure you have a barrier around the stove. Drunks tend to smell funny when they are burning.

Don't sweat the big stuff... its a room with hot rocks and water and a place to sit.

I have done suana in a tent with a stove and hot rocks. So just do it.

I'm really surprised about this website and it's author's theory about the origin of the Finnish Sauna. I think he should be corrected, and since you seem to be an expert..

Author's comment
I am glad that you are surprised about my theory about the origin of the Finnish sauna. My theory is not very sexy, but it is the only plausible theory I know. We would like to publish all theories about the origin of Finnish sauna. Please send your theory to us.
